The Clement Hancock Family

At John Hancock's death, he was buried yards away from the home site.
At that time it was customary for each family to bury on their property. A few years later families began burying at churches.

In 1883 Erastus Jerome Hancock came into possession of this land. He set apart one acre of land, the plot being used for the cemetery. He had a deed made and recorded in the county court house. This cemetery to be used by all the families and connections of John Hancock who so desired to be buried there.

John and Eleanor Jackson Hancock had 8 children, Morgan, Susan, Jackson, Sarah, Green, Elizabeth, Frank and Anne. All are buried there except Green - in Shurley cemetery, and Sarah in Perry cemetery.

This information along with the accompanying sketch was compiled in October 6, 1976 by Elizabeth Mary Hancock (named for both grandmothers - was to be called Lizzie May) dau. of Erastus Jerome & Martha O. Hatcher Hancock, granddaugther of John & Eleanor Jackson Hancock. The copies where kindly furnished to me by Joyce Rape Harrison.

Lizzie May used the letter "d.", "s.", "w." and "h.". I have replaced these with dau., son, wife and husband respectively. The question marks are hers.

(*) We are unsure as to what Lizzie May meant by "not authentic"

(**) Lizzie May's list reads, "Space for w. of John R. Hancock - Mattie Smith". However, Mattie Smith is buried in Macon at Riverside Cemetery and A.J. Burnett was buried there instead. (Joyce Rape Harrison, 1999)

The Perry cemetery is that of the Perry family, not to be confused with the Evergreen Cemetery in Perry, Ga.
